B.A. in Writing and Rhetoric Concentration

Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in English degree provides a broad foundation in the study of writing and texts, including literature, film and media, and rhetoric. Students with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric choose advanced courses in technical communication, professional writing, and editing, as well as courses that specialize in topics, such as the rhetoric of empathy, political communication, and writing about music, food, or the environment.

General Requirements

Students in the Concentration must take at least three of the below writing and rhetoric courses. In choosing their nine hours of electives in writing and rhetoric, majors must take at least one course in theory and one course practice, according to the following categories:

Theory:

  • ENG 3318: Approaches to Writing and Rhetoric

Practice:

  • ENG 3303: Technical Writing
  • ENG 3304: Document Design
  • ENG 3305: Life Writing
  • ENG 3311: Practices in Writing and Rhetoric
  • ENG 3342: Editing

In addition to general education requirements, all English majors take 36 hours of English courses, including First-Year English and Sophomore Literature courses.  Of those 36 hours, students must complete 24 hours of advanced courses, including:

  • ENG 3301
  • 2 Early Literature courses
  • Single Author course
  • 4000-level course

Students may satisfy multiple requirements with one course.
